West Midlands Regional Prevent Lead for Further and Higher Education,
Department for Education (DfE)

Hifsa Haroon-Iqbal is the Regional Prevent Lead for Further and Higher Education with the Department for Education and works across the West Midlands. This role enables Hifsa to work with the many universities, colleges and independent providers, delivering information, support and training needs around the governments Prevent agenda.  Hifsa worked in Higher Education for thirteen years before taking up this post. She is a well-known figure regionally and nationally and has made regular appearances on national television and radio. She has published widely including a number of blogs and articles about radicalisation and counter terrorism in the written press and academic pieces in journals and books.  In 2011, Hifsa was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant of Staffordshire and received an MBE in her Majesty’s New Year’s Honours List for services to community cohesion.

  • Assessing national progress across the education system in preventing, identifying and challenging extremism
  • Exploring the latest DfE guidance in ensuring robust safeguarding against radicalisation, promoting British values and supporting Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development for pupils
  • Analysing how approaches to counter extremism can successfully be embedded within curricula to support self-sufficiency and resilience against extreme content and influences
  • Evaluating the next steps in supporting schools to enhance multi-agency collaborations, community engagement and parental partnerships
